CEU Mens Basketball defeat Mesa Community College
Tonight the College of Eastern Utah will face off against Mesa Community College Thunderbirds for the right to go to the NJCAA national championship tournament in Hutchinson Kan.
There’s a good amount of CEU students that made the trip up to Salt Lake tonight to support the Eagles in their bid to make it to the tourney. Michael Glover answers right back with a nice play in the paint. MCC has jumped out to an early four point lead, 8-4 with 17:00 minutes left in the half. Isaiah Williams nails a three to get the Eagles within one point. Despite their smaller numbers the Scream Team is loud tonight. Tony Dalton drains a three giving CEU their first lead of the game its 12-10, at the 14:15 mark. At the first media timeout CEU has the two point lead. CEU is playing a full-court press tonight. The Eagles complete a nice play working the ball around the outside before Cliff Colimon fed it to Mills for the easy lay-up. Jorquim goes to the line at 10 minutes and misses them both its 16-12 CEU. Alex Rudd of MCC just gave his coach a look that is usually reserved for when two people don’t speak the same language. The Thunderbirds hit a shot to pull within two with eight minutes in the half. Colimon just drained a three from way down town giving the Eagles a five-point lead. At the second media timeout CEU has a 19-14 five point lead. With 6:45 to go MCC has 6 fouls. CEU has 3 fouls. Glover extends the Eagle lead to 6 and hears his name chanted by the Scream Team. Hunt hits a three to pull the T-birds within three points. CEU has led for most of this half, but MCC is threatening their lead. With 4:40 CEU has a one point 20-19 lead. Dalton draws a foul and will try to give CEU a bit more of a cushion. Dalton converts on both free throws and gives the Eagles a three point lead. Despite MCC’s early troubles they’ve stayed in the game and kept it close. It seems the two teams have fallen into a routine MCC cuts the Eagle lead to one, and CEU promptly scores again to bump the lead back to three. Jorquim gets called for three-in-the-key giving MCC a chance to take the lead. Rogers goes to the line for MCC and ties the game at 26. MCC has not led since the 14:50 mark in the half. Williams hits two foul shots and gives the Eagles a two-point advantage with 1:30 to go. Tola Akomolafe hits a shot and draws the foul for MCC. Mills drives the court and gets a lay-up to cut the MCC lead to two. There’s 12 minutes to go and MCC is leading 41-37. In a big play for CEU Hawk-Harris takes a charge to prevent MCC from scoring on a fast break. Mills comes up with another huge play drawing a foul and hitting his shot to give the eagles an and one opportunity. He misses his foul shot but CEU gets the ball back. MCC takes the lead but CEU answers right back. Thompson gets a bucket and draws a foul. Apparently the SLCC scoreboard can’t count fouls past 10, but I’m pretty sure that was MCC’s 14th foul of the half. Thompson hits his shot and gives CEU a one-point lead. The Eagles need a big defensive stop now with only two minutes to play its CEU 55 MCC 54. MCC has the ball, with 30 seconds to go they work the ball around the arc, but then decide to call a time out. There’s 17.9 seconds in the game, and 16 seconds on the shot clock. MCC needs a three on this possession or the game is likely over. MCC inbounds the ball, and the Eagles play man defense. With six seconds left MCC takes another timeout. The T-birds inbound the ball again with six seconds in the game, and four on the shot clock. You could cut the tension with a knife as MCC passes the ball in after a CEU timeout.
