Mission
The Recreation Extension provides, generally at the request from the community, educational opportunities and programs in community Sports and Fitness, Outdoor Recreation, the Outdoor Classroom and CEU Outdoors to non-traditional students or students in non-traditional times and environments. The Extension provides activities at the campus and at recreational sites in and out of the State.
Function
The purpose and function of the Extension is to provide recreational opportunities for CEU students and the community. The courses are usually developed at the request of the community. While some of these courses like the Climbing Wall are held inside, most of these programs are designed to be held in the outdoor environment. That may be a GPS course at the campus or a river activity on the Colorado River, a backpack through the Tavaputs or a climb through the narrows of the San Raphael. These can be credit or noncredit courses and are usually offered in a non-traditional time frame outside the normal semester system. Most of the instructors are adjunct and teach specific courses because of their personal commitments rather than the adjunct pay. Through a partnership with Carbon County Recreation and CEU Continuing Education, the Extension can provide a more inclusive and cost effective program. Combining the two resources enables the Extension to have programs that have sufficient equipment that is needed for a complete program. It gives the students and community a better access complete programs that are scheduled to accommodate both student and community time frames.
