Parent Partners
Parents as Partners in Education
|
In GEAR UP, parents are partners
with students, teachers, principals, and the community. The guiding
belief of the program is that all parents want their children to
succeed. The philosophy is holistic and participant-centered. Parent
leaders work as mentors and help create needs assessments, develop
curriculum, facilitate workshops and plan programs.
GEAR UP parent workshops and
classes are interactive and inquiry-based. Educators incorporate
culturally relevant pedagogy, access to technology and the arts,
cooperative learning and critical thinking into the classroom.
The GEAR UP model demonstrates that
parents are positive role models. The fact that they are lifelong
learners has proven to be a motivating factor in the lives of their
adolescent children.
