CEU has established a reputation as a research-intensive university through the outstanding work of its faculty members, 17 interdisciplinary research centers, and some dozen less structured faculty/student research groups.
In line with the University’s commitment to high quality research, our Faculty obtained over €14 million in new research grants in 2013-2014 with the support of the Academic Cooperation and Research Support Office. CEU has been host institution of 10 European Research Council (ERC) grants - among them a major Synergy grant. In 2014 CEU Faculty members have successfully applied for further 3 ERC grants; these projects are to start during 2015. CEU placed fifth among European universities in the number of research awards in social sciences and humanities obtained via the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme. During 2014, CEU researchers collaborated with close to 100 universities on collaborative research projects, 20 running of these were funded by the EU. Through ACRO, over 20 applications were filed in 2014 by CEU faculty for the new Horizon 2020 EU funding phase, and six have already been awarded.
Other external funders of research and academic events include public funding agencies, such as the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA), National Science Foundation, US State Department, USAID and The Korea Foundation; international organizations, among them the The United Nations Environment Programme, International Visegrad Fund; and private foundations, like Siemens AG, Volkswagen Foundation, Open Society Foundation, Fritz Thyssen Foundation
