Student Family Support FAQ

I would like to apply for the SFS grant. What is the procedure? Where shall I submit my documents? Who approves my application?

First, read the policy at the Students with Children website and make photocopies of the required items listed. Hand in the collected documents to the Student Center to Viktoria Magocsi, Student Insurance, Health and Well-being Officer. The submitted information is handled confidentially. Do not enclose originals.

When the final decision is made by a Higher Management Committee, it will be communicated via official email sent out by Viktoria Magocsi. Note, the Committee meets once a month.

What is the total amount of the support? How long am I eligible to receive it?

The amount of support is 500,000 HUF per child, per academic year. A new application should be submitted at the beginning of each academic year to become eligible for the support.

PhD students may receive the SFS support in the first 36-month stipend period, while MA students are eligible throughout their studies at CEU.

Is there a set deadline for the application?

No. The application can be submitted anytime when the documents required by the SFS application form are prepared. Note, that the foremost condition of applying for the support is that your children have official residence documents in Hungary (these include a valid residence permit and accommodation reporting form in case of non-EU citizens or a registration card and address card for EU citizens). The support is paid retrospectively and the amount is counted from the official registration of the children’s residence in Hungary.

What if the residence documents of my children are not ready by the time of the submission of my application? Do I need to wait for the documents to be prepared?

Yes. Please submit only the complete application package. Note, the support is paid retrospectively and the amount is counted from the official registration of the children’s residence in Hungary.

Do I need to have a Hungarian bank account to get the support?

Yes. In order to get the payments, set your Hungarian bank account details in the student database (under stipend tab).

Can I get the whole support in one sum?

No. The approved amount of support will be divided into the months applicable. The amount is counted from the official registration of the children’s residence in Hungary or from the eligibility date:

-  For PhD students the total support is divided into 12 months, the maximum monthly amount is thus 41,660 HUF.

-  For MA students the support is divided into 10 months (except those students where the enrollment durations is more than 10 months) thus the maximum monthly amount is 50,000 HUF.

How long does it take for CEU to transfer the approved amount of support?

After the decision is made by the Committee, the transfer takes place within 3-4 working days.

I am a PhD student in year 4, just running out of my stipend period. Am I be eligible for the support?

No. PhD students may receive the SFS support in the first 36-month stipend period.

I am a part-time student at CEU. Am I eligible to apply for the SFS support?

No. Only full-time, enrolled students are eligible to apply for the family support.

Am I eligible for the support during my Write-up grant period while I receive stipend?

No. PhD students may receive the SFS support in the first 36-month stipend period.

How does the plan work for Hungarian Students who receive supports from the Hungarian Government?

Students and/or their partners on state support have to prove their state benefit recipient status by submitting a copy of the official letter including the amount and validity date of the state support. Students (or their partners) who receive state benefits for a child are eligible for the SFS support but the amount of it is the difference between the total SFS support and the state benefit. Students (and their partners) who receive more than what CEU offers are not eligible.

Hungarian students (or partners) usually get family allowance (családi pótlék) each month and different types of support if the kid(s) is/are under 3 (e.g. Birth Grant (Anyasági Támogatás), Family Allowance (Családi Pótlék), TGYÁS (Terhességi-Gyermekágyi Segély), GYED (Gyermekgondozási Díj), GYES (Gyermekgondozási Segély), GYET (Gyermeknevelési Támogatás – főállású anyaság esetén).

My spouse/partner receives family support in Hungary each month. Can I apply for the support?

The basic principle of the policy is equal opportunity. The program is primarily designed for those who don’t receive any financial assistance to support their children while studying in Hungary, compared to those who receive assistance from their respective home governments. Students who don’t receive any support are entitled to the whole amount. Students (and their partners) who are recipients of state benefits can also receive CEU support but the amount they get is the difference between the total CEU support and the state benefit. Students (and partner) who receive more than what CEU offers are not eligible. Students and/or their partners on state support have to prove their state benefit recipient status by submitting a copy of the official letter including the amount and validity date of the state support.

CEU considers any state-provided benefit a child is entitled to receive upon birth or for a set period of time as government support regardless of which parent officially receives the support for the child.

My spouse/partner is a recipient of family support abroad in our home country. Can I apply for the SFS support if my kid(s) live(s) with me in Hungary?

My spouse/partner lives abroad in our home country with our kid(s). Am I still eligible to get the financial support?

No. The policy only applies to those who can prove their children’s legal residence in Hungary with residence documents issued by the Hungarian Immigration and Asylum Office. These include a valid residence permit and accommodation reporting form in case of non-EU citizens or a registration card and address card for EU citizens. Note, the address of the children must match with the applicants’ registered address in Hungary.

My partner and I have separated/divorced; my child(ren) live(s) with my partner. Am I eligible for the support given that the address of my child(ren) is different from mine?

No. The policy only applies to those who live together with their kid(s) in Hungary under the same address (proof with address card or accommodation reporting form). The support helps students accommodate their children’s needs so that the parents can focus on their studies.

Which type of support counts as governmental support?

Any state-provided benefit a child is entitled to receive upon birth or for a set period of time is considered government support. Students and/or their partners on state support have to prove their state benefit recipient status by submitting a copy of the official letter including the amount and validity date of the state support. In Hungary this includes but is not limited to: Birth Grant (Anyasági Támogatás), Family Allowance (Családi Pótlék), TGYÁS (Terhességi-Gyermekágyi Segély), GYED (Gyermekgondozási Díj), GYES (Gyermekgondozási Segély), GYET (Gyermeknevelési Támogatás – főállású anyaság esetén).
