Vedres Wins U.S. National Science Foundation Grant

October 2, 2012

Balazs Vedres, associate professor and director of the Center for Network Science, won a research grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation in partnership with David Stark of Columbia University. Their research will investigate the social network sources of creativity. While there is considerable network research on innovation adoption, little is known about the network structures that can contribute to innovation generation. Vedres’ project is focused on analyzing large historical datasets on jazz bands and video-game developer teams to identify the most fertile network configurations. Preliminary findings based on more than 20,000 jazz recording and 15,000 video game sessions demonstrate the importance of having strong collaborative ties and diverse work experience simultaneously.
