Earth Day was officially commemorated across the globe this year for the 43rd time and, at CEU, the celebration focused on the benefits of bicycle mobility. On April 24, the CEU Sustainable Campus Initiative and Campus Redevelopment Office sponsored a day of awareness and bicycle maintenance skill building, to encourage Budapest's budding bicycle culture. Volunteers also showed off seven refurbished bicycles that will serve as the pilot fleet for CEU's bicycle-sharing system, the first of its kind at a Hungarian university.
The day began with a local and organic breakfast cooked and served by students in the outdoor bicycle parking area on campus. The large, secured space accommodates many bicycles, as over 100 members of the University community ride to work or class each day.
The day's festivities were in collaboration with the Hungarian Cyclist’s Association, Budapest Bike Kitchen, and ELTE EKSZ.
