Jaap Scholten was already a successful writer when he decided to come to CEU. He had a special project in mind, to pursue the story of his wife’s family and the Hungarian aristocracy of Transylvania. He did so first in an academic fashion, traveling to the region and conducting interviews that formed the basis of his M.A. thesis. Then he took what he saw as raw material and wrote a book for the general public, which has now become his first work published in English, “Comrade Baron: A Journey Through the Vanishing World of the Transylvanian Aristocracy.” He also made a documentary on the topic for Dutch television. He recommends that other CEU students break out of their academic mindset on occasion as well. “Think about using your research or thesis for a general audience, in written form or in film,” he says. “It can make your own life more adventurous!” To meet Scholten and get a signed copy of the book, attend the launch event on May 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Popper Room.
