October 8, 2013

“Following the Peacock,” a documentary film directed by Eszter Spat, a researcher in and alumna of the Department of Medieval Studies, has been accepted into competition at the Duhok 2nd International Film Festival to be held Oct. 9-16. The anthropological documentary, edited by Spat and CEU Video Program Manager Gloria Oh, introduces the Yezidi, a little-known religious minority of Northern Iraq. It follows the tour of their most sacred object, the Standard of the Peacock, through the settlements of Sinjar Mountain, where the traditional way of life and customs are undergoing rapid change. Spat has been researching the religious and social structure of the Yezidi since 2002. She will travel to the festival in Duhok, a multicultural city in the Kurdistan region of Iraq that played an important role in the Assyrian empire. For more information, see
