November 19, 2013

After leading the CEU Library since its establishment 20 years ago, Maria Szlatky is retiring as director on Dec. 31. Under Szlatky’s leadership, CEU built one of the best English-language libraries in the social sciences and humanities in Europe. The Library has been at the core of CEU's academic endeavors and has contributed to all the University’s academic achievements. In recognition of her outstanding work, President and Rector John Shattuck has awarded Szlatky the title of Library Director Emerita.

Diane Geraci has been named the new director of the CEU Library, effective Jan. 1. Geraci, who has a background in the social sciences, is currently co-interim director of MIT Libraries, where she also serves as associate director for information resources. Previously, she served as librarian for the social sciences at Harvard College Library, and held joint appointments as the director of science libraries in the University of Michigan University Library and faculty associate at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. She also serves on the boards of U.S. and international organizations and initiatives dedicated to the advancement of library services, research, and teaching in higher education. She is a representative on the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (COAPI). She brings to CEU a unique and well-balanced combination of expertise in traditional library operations at some of the best U.S. universities and knowledge of advanced technologies. Geraci will oversee the reorganization of the Library that has been made possible by the campus redevelopment project, working closely with faculty members, students, and administrators.
