International Roma Day on April 8 is a day to celebrate Romani culture and language, to honor and remember ancestors, reward the achievements of current generations, as well as to raise awareness of the issues Roma people face nowadays.
CEU honored the day with a screening of two short documentaries, “Uprooted” and “Auschwitz-Rekviem,” organized by the Human RightS Initiative and Romedia, and the opening of the photo exhibition “Accessories.” The exhibition of photos depicting Roma stereotypes is a cooperation of CEU’s Roma Access Programs (RAP) students and graduates with the photographer Andras Jokuti. The title refers to the "accessories" being attached to the individuals of the Roma community by mainstream society. The exhibition is on display in the Octagon until May 5.
RAP students and graduates also took an active part in organizing a march and casting of flowers in the Danube river, symbolizing unity of Roma people around the world. Students held a debate on the achievements of the Roma Decade, too, organized at the Open Society Archives.
