Changes and New Appointments in the Central Administration

Kati Farkas completed her very successful two terms as Provost/Academic Pro-Rector at the end of July. On CEU President and Rector John Shattuck’s recommendation, the Senate has elected Liviu Matei to succeed Kati. The position of Provost/Academic Pro-Rector is being reorganized. In particular, as is the regular practice in the U.S., the Provost will oversee the budget of the university as well as its academic affairs. The position of COO, previously held by Liviu, will not be filled.

A new position of Pro-Rector for Social Sciences and Humanities has been created, reporting to the Provost. This position reflects both a recognition of the importance of the social sciences and humanities at CEU, and the decision to allow the Provost to concentrate on strategic issues, rather than day-to-day academic matters. The Rector has appointed and the Senate has elected Laszlo Kontler to this position. Laci will also continue for another year in his role as Pro-Rector for Hungarian Affairs. The position of Associate Provost for Social Sciences and Humanities that has been ably filled by Prem Kumar Rajaram, who has completed his term, is subsumed in the new Pro-Rector position. A short memo detailing the distribution of tasks between the Provost and the Pro-Rector for Social Sciences and Humanities, as approved by the Senate, is attached.

Serge Sych has been appointed to the newly created position of Senior Vice-President for Enrollment Management and Alumni Relations, reporting to the President and Rector. This position combines Serge’s previous responsibilities for Alumni Relations and Career Services with student recruitment and enrollment, emphasizing the strategic role of CEU’s 12,000 alumni in the recruitment of students. Peter Johnson, who did an excellent job as Vice President for Student Services for the last four years, left CEU at the end of July to take up a new position at Dominican University in California.
Margaret Bolter has been appointed to the newly created position of Vice-President for Administration, covering a number of administrative areas previously supervised by the COO. She reports to the President and Rector.

Chrys Margaritidis has been appointed to the newly created position of Dean of Students, reporting to the Provost. This position allows increased attention to matters of student life at CEU. It also represents another aspect of CEU’s movement in the direction of a more U.S.-based institutional model.

A revised CEU organization chart is attached.
