Viktor Lagutov, head of the Environmental Systems Laboratory at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy at CEU, has been appointed Chair of the Eye on Environmental Education Special Initiative, one of the programs of the Eye on Earth Community.
Eye on Earth addresses the crucial importance of environmental and societal information and networking to decision-making. It aims to convene thought and action leaders of the worldwide community, converge consensus on the key areas of mutual importance, and finally collaborate towards strengthening existing initiatives and filling the gaps into the future.
In December 2011, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) through the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), convened global leaders, innovators and decision-makers to an inaugural Eye on Earth Summit, where they produced a set of eight Special Initiatives covering various social and environmental themes to support effective environmental and societal data and information sharing. With hundreds of stakeholders around the world, these Special Initiatives, work towards the second Eye on Earth Summit, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi in October 2015.
One of these such projects is ISEPEI, or “In-Service ICT Training for Environmental Professionals”, run by Lagutov at CEU, aims to show decision-makers the potential use and application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in a variety of environmental disciplines, initially water security and disaster management.
