Central European University is ranked 16th in the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017, published on Nov. 30, 2016. This makes CEU one of the top 300 research-led universities in 50 countries classified as emerging economies (advanced and secondary) or "frontier economies" by FTSE. Institutions from only 41 of these countries made the final top 300 list.
The ranking uses the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, in which CEU ranked among the world's top 350 universities and ranked 8th in terms of international outlook. These examine each university's strengths against all of its core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. For the emerging economies rankings, the methodology has been recalibrated to better reflect the characteristics and development priorities of universities in developing economies, THE said. More weight is given, for example, to a university's industry links and international outlook.
