CEU’s Campus Redevelopment Project Wins CIJ Award for Environmental Sustainability

CEU’s campus redevelopment project, the first phase of which was completed in August 2016 with the opening of the new Nador 13 and 15 buildings, received the Environmental Social and Sustainability Award, part of the CIJ Awards Hungary competition sponsored by CIJ, Europe’s leading Real Estate digital and print news provider. Campus Redevelopment Director Pal Baross accepted the award on behalf of CEU November 29 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel here in Budapest.

The award recognizes organizations, private or public, “who have implemented outstanding and innovative sustainable techniques or technologies, demonstrating a commitment to sustaining our environmental, social and economic health. Winners are an elite group of committed leaders reducing environmental impact, contributing to the growth of a more sustainable economy. By prioritizing sustainability throughout their operations, programs, technology, products and company culture, they serve as a model within the industry and community,” CIJ said in its description of the prize criteria.

In planning and executing the project, CEU paid special attention to the integration of the criteria of BREEAM, the world’s leading assessment method for sustainable buildings. As CEU has been long promoting sustainability in higher education, it was no question that the new campus should adhere to principles of green architecture. By undergoing the BREEAM accreditation process, however, the university made a strong statement by deciding to surpass its own standards and by raising awareness about the significance of sustainability in architecture. In practice, the “Very Good” status which the new campus design achieved means no parking places, smart hydration, support of recycling, a rooftop garden with local plants, and energy-efficient heating and cooling.

The winning entries in each category advance to the Best of the Best, HOF Awards in 2017 where winners are selected from nine countries from around Central & South East Europe. The winners of the CIJ AWARDS Hungary 2016 are:
