Professor the Hon Gareth Evans, chancellor of the Australian National University, former Australian Foreign Minister, and President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group sent a letter of solidarity to CEU.
"May I join those civilised voices worldwide expressing their outrage at the blatant move by the Hungarian Government and Parliament to shut down the Central European University, at which I have been proud in recent years to be a Distinguished Visiting Professor. CEU, with its student body drawn from over 100 countries, is not only respected globally for the quality of its teaching and research, but has unfailingly strived to uphold its mission of promoting the values of open society in the face of post-Cold War Europe’s communist inheritance. It is a tragic irony that its existence is now being threatened by the authoritarian right. As so many have said, and I share absolutely their view, this intolerable threat to the freedom of CEU is a threat to academic freedom everywhere."
