October 9, 2017 – This morning, the spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the following statement in answer to a reporter’s question:
"When the debate about this university started in the Spring this year we made very clear that for us academic freedom is a very precious good," Steffen Seibert said. "As you may know, there are new developments: Central European University announced on October 4 via a press release that it came to an understanding with Bard College, and that now the agreement between the Hungarian government and the U.S. state of New York can be signed. Now we expect from the Hungarian government that this agreement be swiftly signed and implemented, so that CEU can continue its teaching activities in Budapest."
CEU welcomes the Chancellor’s spokesperson's statement and urges rapid signature and ratification of the agreement so we can remain in Budapest and continue to flourish here as a world-class graduate institution with a dual Hungarian and American identity.
