The European Association for International Education presented the 2018 Constance Meldrum Award for Vision and Leadership to CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff on September 11 in Geneva at the kickoff of its annual conference. The award recognizes CEU's defense of academic freedom in Hungary after legislation targeting the university was introduced in 2017.
"In today’s times, as the field of international higher education is increasingly dealing with the consequences of the rise of populism, the EAIE recognizes Michael’s outstanding contributions to defending academic freedom," the organization said in a statement.
CEU has taken all steps to comply with the legislation and has repeatedly called on the Hungarian government to sign the agreement it negotiated with the State of New York, where CEU is registered and now operates academic activities, in order to enable CEU to continue operations in Budapest, its home of over 25 years.
