The Open Society Foundations issued the following statement of support in solidarity with CEU.
"George Soros helped found Central European University in 1991. In the years since, it has been one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the region, and a beacon to Central and Eastern European countries transitioning from communism to democracy following the fall of the Soviet Union. We lament the school’s need to leave its home in Budapest at the behest of the Hungarian government, which continues to erode its people’s freedoms, rights, and access to information.
"We stand in solidarity with CEU’s decision to preserve its academic integrity by relocating to Vienna, and are grateful for the warm welcome being extended by the university’s new home. And we thank those in Hungary and around the world who continue to speak out in support of the university’s mission and the principle of academic freedom itself. This light may flicker but it will never go out." —Patrick Gaspard, President, Open Society Foundations
