Yuval Noah Harari Discusses the Bright Side of Nationalism

Professor Yuval Noah Harari of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem spoke at CEU’s Reasons for Hope presidential lecture series on May 8, 2019. Harari is the bestselling author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century

Harari’s lecture, titled “The Bright Side of Nationalism,” emphasized the continuing relevance of nationalism in a global age. He argued that nationalism and globalism have the potential to support, rather than contradict, each other.

Harari cautioned against “viewing all forms of nationalism as inherently evil” in the opening of his lecture. “I want to focus today on the bright side of nationalism, on its immense contribution to humanity and on its continuing importance in the 21st century,” he continued.
