Central European University’s Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) and Sustainable CEU are organizing events that will take place in the CEU community starting September 20th and throughout the following week in acknowledgement of the Global Climate Strike, the global movement to encourage urgent action from decision makers in response to the impending climate crisis.
Throughout the past year determined young persons from across the world have been demanding bold commitments from policy makers and governments to end dependence on fossil fuels in an effort to limit future global warming below 1.5°C. This goal and the need for immediate action is consistent with the most current scientific assessment of the challenge that climate change poses.
There will be numerous events taking place in the CEU community and beyond in honor of the Global Climate Strike.
On Saturday, 21 September, HRSI and Sustainable CEU are organizing a workshop where they will craft banners to carry at the Global Climate Strike on 27 September. Some paint, brushes, cardboard and other materials will be provided.
On 27 September Fridays for Future Hungary, an initiative of mainly high schoolers, is organizing a walk starting at 10 a.m. at Clark Adam Square in Budapest, to join millions of young people across the world to demand urgent climate action.
Those CEU students who would like to go as a group will meet at 9:30, before the walk, at the Nador 15 cafe.
The Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) is an awareness raising and capacity building organization based at CEU. It was founded in 1999 by the students of the CEU Legal Studies Human Rights Program. Sustainable CEU is a student-based initiative to promote sustainability issues within the CEU campus and the wider community.
Besides the events organized by the CEU community, Extinction Rebellion Hungary and Fridays for the Future Hungary will collaborate in organizing numerous events throughout the week including multiple social events, public discussions, demonstrations and advocacy meet ups.
Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimize the risk of social collapse.
Fridays for the Future is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 year old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis.
