Vienna is not only about monuments, bronze statutes and majestic buildings from the era of the Habsburg Empire. The city also has a lot to offer to nature lovers. Since studying at CEU can be very demanding and stressful at times, one of the best ways to have some mental rest and clear your head is to escape to the woods on the outskirts of the city.
Vienna has 13 city hiking trails and you can easily find them through the Wiener Stadtwanderwege website or you can download the application to your cell phone. With a couple of friends, we decided to explore trail number 4 that goes near Steinhof, the site of the future CEU campus. In the morning, we got off the metro at Hütteldorf station and after just a few minutes of walking, we found ourselves on the edge of the forest.
An incredibly big and probably centuries-old tree heralded the beginning of the trail. The forest was very peaceful as we were almost the only people on the trail at that time. We could simply enjoy the fresh air, birds’ twittering, and the rustling of branches.
After reaching the Jubiläumswarte, a tower at the top of the hill, we decided to visit the huge hospital area of Steinhof to see what kind of environment awaits future CEU students.
On the way there, we passed by some perfect spots for a picnic, and we told ourselves that we definitely needed to return in the spring with picnic bags. Steinhof itself has beautiful green meadows where several families were flying a kite. It is a very calm and peaceful place where you can easily forget about the hustle and bustle of the city center.
The present with its recurring lockdowns is not easy, but there are ways to make it more bearable. Spending time in nature, enjoying the sun and fresh air is definitely one of them. Check the Wiener Stadtwaderwege website to see which trail is best for you and enjoy your hike!
