He studies Anthropology at Central European University (CEU) in Vienna and was arrested by the police in Cairo after having traveled to Egypt to visit his family during the semester break. His detention has since continued to be prolonged, without access to legal counsel. He is accused of being a member of terrorist groups, deliberately spreading false news and using a fake social media account for the purpose of spreading false news.

This constant prolonging of detention without trial in Egypt is often used to arbitrarily detain human rights activists, journalists, lawyers and opposition politicians.

Ahmed Samir Santawy is a prisoner of conscience. He is wrongfully convicted and must be released immediately.
