"I am joining the international demonstration organized for today by the Free Ahmed Samir movement. It was exactly two months ago today that the Egyptian authorities arrested Ahmed Samir Santawy, a master's student at CEU, who was researching the history of the reproductive rights of Egyptian women. Ahmed is currently sitting in pre-trial detention – which has been extended three times – without legal representation. He is accused of "joining a terrorist organization," "funding a terrorist organization" and "disseminating false information on social media." These accusations are unfounded and Amnesty International, as well as several other organizations, national and European politicians have spoken out in support for Ahmed's release. Scholarly research is not a crime; on the contrary: it is a human right guaranteed by international conventions. Freedom for Ahmed Samir!"
