Statement on CEU student Ahmed Samir Santawy

CEU is seriously concerned for the health of its imprisoned student Ahmed Samir Santawy who began a hunger strike last week to protest a 4-year sentence in jail on charges of spreading false news outside the country. CEU Rector Michael Ignatieff has appealed to President Sisi to release him on humanitarian grounds.

"It is an outrage that a researcher has been thrown in an Egyptian jail for nothing more than exercising the free expression of opinion while studying in Austria, in the heart of Europe", said Ignatieff. "He must be released immediately."
