The Central European University (CEU) Department of Medieval Studies has announced Ahmet Demirel and Nicholas Tayler as the 2023-24 recipients of the Janos Bak Award. The Bak scholarship was established in 2019 in honor of the Medieval Studies Professor Janos Bak, a highly regarded medievalist whose research focused on Central Europe. Bak co-founded CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies in 1993 and was professor in the department until 2004.
The scholarship supports students focused on the history of medieval Central, East-Central and Eastern Europe. Demirel’s thesis will explore "The Ottoman-Habsburg encounter in the context of the Protestant Church Reformation," and Tayler will be writing about "Hungary, Lotharingia and the Walloons of the Eger Valley - A Case of International Entanglement." Both incoming students will receive 2000 euros to support their studies in one of the MA programs in Medieval Studies at CEU.
