CIVICA Research Conference Call for Posters 2023

CIVICA is calling for posters to exhibit at the CIVICA Research Conference, taking place at Sciences Po on October 12-13, 2023 in Paris, France.

The posters should ideally be related (but are not limited) to one (or more) of CIVICA’s four research themes:

  • Societies in Transition, Crises of Earth
  • Democracy in the 21st Century
  • Europe Revisited
  • Data-Driven Technologies for the Social Sciences

Applications from disciplines in the humanities, economics, and political economy are strongly encouraged.

This initiative aims to showcase emerging research in these fields, reward excellence in research and foster networking opportunities amongst the CIVICA community.

Eligibility and award

Individual PhD and postdoctoral researchers from CIVICA’s 10 member universities are invited to submit a poster to share their findings with peers working in the social sciences across Europe. Approximately 100 participants are expected to take part in the conference.

The posters should highlight research results of current projects. One author per project of the selected posters will be invited to attend the conference in Paris – travel costs and accommodation will be covered by the hosting institution (Sciences Po).

The selected posters will be exhibited throughout the conference in Sciences Po’s campus in Paris, and the authors will have the chance to present their posters at a dedicated session. The selected posters may also be featured on the CIVICA communications channels, and the winning poster will receive a prize on the second day of the conference. The committee evaluating the winning poster will pay attention to elements such as: relevance and clarity of the topic presented, readability of the poster (graphic design, text, pictures, graphs), strength of the method and conclusion presented, quality of the oral presentation of the poster by the participant.

Interested PhD and postdoctoral researchers must submit an abstract and a draft poster.

Abstracts cannot exceed one-page in length in single spacing formatting, and they must be submitted in PDF format.

Poster drafts must use an A0 format (118.9 cm x 84.1 cm), and they must be submitted in PDF format. Please use 20+ font for titles; 12+ font for text, using a sans serif font.

Both abstracts and posters must be written in English.

Details on submission materials:

The abstract on the research contributions included in the poster must contain the following details:

  • Title of project
  • Author(s) and affiliation(s)
  • Project runtime
  • Goals of the research project
  • Background information on project
  • Explanation of the social relevance and the anticipated impact of the contribution

A draft/mock-up of the actual poster to be displayed must contain the following aspects:

  • Title of project
  • Author(s) and affiliation(s)
  • Project runtime
  • Main focus/goals of the research project
  • Outcomes/results to date
  • Societal relevance of project
  • Measures to maximise impact of research results

A maximum of one candidate from each of the 10 CIVICA universities will be selected to attend the conference at Sciences Po in Paris on 12-13 October 2023.

The decision on which candidate will attend the conference will be made by the PhD/postdoc’s home university and will be based on academic excellence.

The deadline for submission of abstracts and poster drafts/mock-up is 30 June 2023. Applicants need to submit their materials via email (see list below) to their home university, using the subject line "Call for posters." Finalists will be informed of their selection by 13 July 2023.

All posters selected for presentation will be required to submit a finalised version of their poster (in PDF format) by 18 September 2023. Posters submitted on time will be printed by the conference organisers.

For posters stemming from consortium projects, it is the responsibility of the applicant to receive permission from project members to submit the poster for exhibition during the conference.
