Sustainable CEU

Sustainable Development

Sustainability is important to CEU. The University is a signatory to the COPERNICUS University Charter for Sustainable Development.

CEU recognizes that sustainable development for universities involves taking responsibility for the environmental footprint of University activities, along with an understanding of the unique role that institutes of higher education play in building stronger and more conscious communities, and advancing contemporary dialogues on environmental issues. CEU community members are expected to do their part to contribute to building a more environmentally conscious University community.

CEU Community Member Expectations: All members of the CEU community are expected to make prudent use of campus resources. Students, staff and visitors are expected to take steps to responsibly manage:

  • Consumption of electricity and energy related to teaching and learning on campus with specific focus on maintaining comfortable interior temperatures efficiently, and reducing electricity consumption of lighting elements, computers and teaching devices through sensible usage.
  • Waste reduction through smart printing and the avoidance of consuming disposable or single use items on campus and the proper handling of necessary waste within the campus selective waste management system.

Recycling

Waste reduction and efficient selective waste management is a primary goal at CEU. Selective waste bins are distributed evenly throughout campus to make smart waste management convenient for all users. Currently, clearly defined paper and plastic collection bins are widely distributed throughout all floors of buildings on campus, and in most cases located in common areas and kitchens. Used batteries can be deposited in the specially marked green bin.

Fresh Water on Campus

Drinking water at CEU meets all Austrian and EU standards for safe and healthy drinking water. Official testing of water quality on campus was initiated with the intent to encourage community members to have full confidence in choosing tap water for hydration needs on campus. Utilizing tap water for hydration purposes has significant environmental, health, and economic benefits.

In accordance with ongoing efforts to promote sustainability initiatives at CEU and to strengthen the commitments outlined in the University Sustainable Development Policy, Sustainable CEU and the Campus Sustainability Advisory Committee (CSAC) encourage you to take advantage of the high quality, free, and environmentally friendly source of drinking water supplied directly to our campus.

Currently filtered and chilled drinking water fountains can be found in the kitchens.

Sustainability Guidelines for events

It is expected that the organizers of events and conferences to be held on campus will aim to utilize campus spaces in a resource conscious manner during event proceedings and also incorporate a waste reduction and management plan into the organization of their on-campus activity. If you would like to learn about how to develop a waste reduction strategy for your on campus event, please contact StrenchockL@ceu.edu

Students and community members who are interested in University sustainability and environmental advocacy at CEU can find more information about how to get involved by emailing Campus Environmental and Sustainability Officer Logan Strenchock, at StrenchockL@ceu.edu.

Bicycles

CEU encourages the use of bicycles as a sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly form of transportation.

CEU community members who commute by bicycle can currently utilize the designated parking area at the back of the building for daily parking purposes. Due to size restrictions of the parking, bikes should not be left for extended periods. Bikes which show signs of being locked in the same place for more than one month will be tagged to encourage removal, and after a two-week observation period, removed. CEU does not take responsibility for stolen bicycles, or damage to bicycles parked in the parking lots.
