Martin Kahanec, associate professor at the School of Public Policy, has been appointed by Deputy Prime Minister and Czech Council for Research, Development and Innovations Chair Pavel Belobradek as the chair of the Council's Expert Panel for Social Sciences. The mission of the Expert Panel is to verify and evaluate the output of research organizations in the Czech Republic, with the main objective of identifying the most significant research results attaining the highest quality in the respective research area.

CEU Professor Peter Balazs, director of the Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS) and former Hungarian foreign minister, was awarded the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award by Tufts University in February. "In the recognition of your integrity and valor as Foreign Minister, encouraging respect for humanities values and rule of law and fighting discrimination," the award said.

Julia Szalai, senior research fellow at CEU's Center for Policy Studies and visiting professor in the Department of Political Science and National Studies Program, has been awarded a research fellowship at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York for academic year 2016-17. Szalai will conduct research in the Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) of the Graduate Center's 'Inequalities' research priority.

With her research project on ‘Women and Trade Unions in Europe and internationally, 1920s to 1980s’ Susan Zimmermann, university professor in the Departments of History and Gender Studies at CEU, has won a fellowship at re:work, the International Research Center on Work and Human Life Cycle, Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin, for academic year 2016-17.

CEU has announced the winners of its Award for Advanced Doctoral Students, given to outstanding students usually in the third year of PhD study, and the Academic Achievement Award for First-Year Doctoral Students, rewarding outstanding performance in coursework and comprehensive exams. Julia Szalai, visiting professor in the Department of Political Science and Nationalism Studies Program and senior research fellow at CEU’s Center for Policy Studies, has been awarded the 2015 Karl Polanyi Prize by the Hungarian Sociological Association. The award is given every year as recognition for the best book or article published in the field of sociology.

CEU has announced the call for applications for its fifth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, launched in 2011, is the first and only such pan-European honor and is accompanied by the €5,000 Diener prize.

The Center for Religious Studies has awarded Dr. Alba Fedeli the CEU Humanities Initiative Religious Studies Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship, hosted by the Center for Religious Studies. The two-year position commenced in September 2015. Fedeli will be conducting research on Early Quranic Manuscripts and their Relationship as Studied through Phylogenetic Software.

Provost/Pro-Rector Liviu Matei presented the 2015 CEU Award for Outstanding Research to Professor Botond Koszegi of the Department of Economics at CEU’s 25th Academic Year Opening Ceremony on September 21, 2015. Similarly to the Yrjo Jahnsson Award Koszegi received earlier this year, the CEU Award for Outstanding Research also recognizes his contribution to the theoretical foundations of behavioral economics, and its application to public finance and contract theory.
