Historians studying the medieval and early modern period take different approaches to reconstruct personhood and its models, according to Gadi Algazi, professor and head of the Department of History at Tel Aviv University, and associate research fellow at Humboldt University, Berlin. Algazi spoke at CEU November 6-9 as part of the Natalie Zemon Davis Annual Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Medieval Studies and the Department of History.

Trust and a sense of belonging, as well as an emphasis on duty in addition to rights, are key to preserving the freedoms of democratic society, according to writer and philosopher Sir Roger Scruton, speaking at CEU November 16 as part of the Rethinking Open Society series. Scruton, whose lecture was entitled “Liberalism and Loyalty,” is a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington and a contributing editor to The New Atlantis.

Jan Hennings, associate professor at CEU's Department of History, received the prize "for most outstanding recent scholarly monograph on pre-modern Slavdom" awarded by the Early Slavic Studies Association (ESSA) during its meeting at the 49th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) in Chicago in November 2017.

Tackling complex societal issues in the modern world is often best done through a multidisciplinary approach. In order to use the most up-to-date resources and to help coax academics out of their disciplinary silos, CEU kicked off the Intellectual Themes Initiative (ITI) in 2015. ITI involves a number of programs including University-wide courses that combine the expertise of academics from different fields. New courses are offered each semester and are open to all CEU students.

In October, a series of student outreach programs organized in conjunction with the Somewhere in Europe/ Gaudiopolis exhibition at Blinken OSA attracted close to 800 students from 38 different schools and institutions across Budapest. The exhibition explored the story of Gaudiopolis (City of Joy), a children’s republic founded in 1945 in Budapest by Lutheran pastor Gábor Sztehlo.

Zsuzsanna Jaszberenyi, director of Admissions at CEU, started her campaign for homeless people in 2009, when Budapest shelters ran out of funds and couldn’t provide food for the homeless. “Families were encouraged to cook for people in need. After doing so for a while at home, I shared the call with the CEU community, and we repeat the drive every year,” Jaszberenyi says.
