Copies of the 2011 CEU Annual Report—published in spring 2012—are available to faculty or staff who would like some to distribute at events or use for other purposes. To place an order, contact Melinda Harlov in the Communications Office, harlovm@ceu.hu. During the upcoming semester, the Communications Office will produce a general-purpose brochure based on the 2011 report, which will be updated and republished annually. The next CEU annual report will be released about this time next year.

The CEU Alumni Campaign has raised more than $55,000 this year, enabling CEU to award 21 student scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year—the largest number of recipients since the scholarship’s inception. The scholarship is awarded to students with a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership potential. The scholarship is funded exclusively by donations from CEU alumni and friends to the Alumni Campaign. A new video produced by the Alumni Relations and Career Services office highlights the 2012-2013 scholarship winners and the causes that motivate them.

Agnes Batory, associate professor and research fellow in the Department of Public Policy, has been promoted to the rank of professor. Her promotion was effective Oct. 10. She will be returning from maternity leave by the end of November.

During its regular meeting in Budapest on Oct. 28, the CEU Board of Trustees elected Robert Soros as a new member. Soros is the president and deputy chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC, where he has worked since 1994. Prior to joining SFM he worked for Schroeder Munchmeyer & Hengst in its equity research department and for Prudential Bache in its risk arbitrage department. Soros is the chairman of Haleakala, also known as The Kitchen, a not–for-profit performance arts organization.

The most recent CEU Alumni Campaign raised more than $41,200, enabling CEU to award 21 scholarships this academic year—the largest number in a single year since its inception. Every year since 2001, CEU has awarded the CEU Alumni Scholarship to outstanding students who have shown a commitment to community service and who have demonstrated their potential to become leaders at CEU and in their future careers. Dorit Geva, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, has received a €75,000 Marie Curie grant from the European Commission. The grant will fund research on the rise of women from political dynasties in party politics, such as France’s Marine Le Pen and Argentina's Christina Kirchner.

CEU Founder and Honorary Chairman George Soros gave keynote remarks Oct. 29 at an event to formalize the expansion of an IMM Executive MBA program CEU Business School helped found 20 years ago. Titled “Empowering Executives for Meeting Global Challenges,” the event marked the addition of three partner universities: EMLYON Business School in France, FGV School of Administration—EBAPE in Brazil, and Tianjin University College of Management and Economics in China.

The Communications Office, in conjunction with CEU’s Summer University, produced three “digital stories” that highlight CEU's location in Budapest and two of last summer's courses: “Problems of the Self” (cognitive science) and “Polemos/Pulmus: Ways of Confrontation in Judaism, Paganism, and Christianity in Late Antiquity” (Jewish/medieval studies). A lower-tech alternative to video, digital storytelling employs still images and interviews that create a narrative. These pieces use photos and commentary from student and faculty participants.
