To be honest, I knew almost nothing about Hungary before I came to CEU. I was planning to spend my free time on traveling in those famous cities of Europe like Vienna, Rome, Paris, etc. Because of our limited conception of Hungary in China, some of my Chinese friends even asked me whether I would visit “the Grand Budapest Hotel”, which comes from a popular film but is actually located in Germany.

When you are preparing for a big move, it is probably one of the most exciting moments in your life. But wait, you are coming for CEU as an incoming student and you have to be ready for one or two years’ stay. Living in a foreign country is not as easy as being a tourist. Thus, you should be more careful when packing your luggage. What should you pack before you come to Budapest? I know that your lifestyles and living habits must be different. For me, who have been here for nearly a year, I still regret that I forgot to bring some important things here when I was packing my bags.

Luckily in the heat wave, there are several places where CEU students can indulge in some gelato, and it only takes a less than 5-minute walk from CEU to get these sweet treats. Damniczki

Tuesday, 1 August 2017, 4:16 PM. A notification alert followed by a slight vibration demanded my attention. I unlocked the screen of my mobile phone and saw the subject of the e-mail received: “Results of your CEU Alumni Scholarship application.” I knew that whatever it was stated in that e-mail could change the studying-abroad-journey which I was about the start. “Dear Milica, Congratulations! We are very pleased to inform you that you have been selected as the Serbian Alumni Scholarship recipient for the 2017-18 academic year…”

The Alumni Reunion Weekend was organized at CEU on May 3-5. It gathered Alumni Chapter Leaders from all over the world to discuss alumni volunteering activities. For many of the alumni it was also a chance to get together with their friends from different parts of the world, united by their alma mater. There was an enthusiastic and energetic feeling throughout the event.

The idea of making a podcast was born upon my arrival to the CEU Residence Center. Never in my life had I access to such a variety of nationalities, backgrounds and opinions! So many times I wished I would have recorded the discussions we’d had. This is why I was so happy to launch a podcast of interviews within the Alumni Scholarship program, where CEU students can get support to make their own projects.

As part of the research for my master’s thesis, I was offered the opportunity to visit the European University Institute in Florence for the month of March. I had previously visited Florence once before, for a few days in 2015, where I was instantly taken aback by the architectural beauty, and most importantly, the incredible food. Furthermore, the numerous resources available at the University related to my area of study were highly relevant, providing a greater depth of research to my final paper. Therefore, as I am sure you can imagine, this was an easy decision to make.

According to Rector and President of Central European University Michael Ignatieff, “we are a generation that has had the misfortune of coming to maturity in a world that is full of hate,” meaning a high degree of intolerance towards other races, religions, sexualities, genders and nationalities.

Being a student in a foreign land can have its ups and downs. With no family to financially support you, the daily dosage of adult life can feel a little overwhelming. Owing to these factors I decided to join the CEU Phonathon Campaign initiated and managed by the Alumni Relations Office for some extra cash. Boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise!
