Nowadays, it is very easy to move around the world and study at different universities. It is not only a great way to spend time but it is also important as there are many differences between educational systems. Only through experience in studying abroad can you get comprehensive and balanced knowledge and skills. In my opinion, it is especially crucial to talk about social science, which can be influenced by national propaganda and biases.
“I had met everyone else during the orientation session except Courtney, who, by the way, is a fellow American!,” exclaimed Talia as she sat at the corner of the downstairs café with a genuine wide smile on her face. This idea of having another American in the Department of International Relations was daunting at first, but Talia and Courtney clicked almost right away.
The fifth month of the academic year is passing by. The holidays were over quickly, and we are already busy with new readings, while discussing new concepts and theories. Before the period of mid-term exams and papers sets in, I decided to ask my fellow students to share their impressions of the fall term at CEU.
I cried two times during the admission process for CEU. The first time when I was admitted —I cried out simultaneously of joy and disbelief that I made it. The second time I cried when I was notified about my financial aid package from the university. But this time they were not the tears of happiness. I cried out of despair. Despite the financial aid package being very generous (and I was extremely thankful for that), it was not enough for me to come to CEU. Unluckily, I did not have any extra savings and I couldn’t rely on my parents’ help much.
The application process is now open and you can apply to CEU for academic year 2019-2020. I remember how excited and even confused I was during my application. Lots of questions emerged in my mind, such as how to elaborate my ideas within the given word limit, how to ask a recommender, and how to improve my statement of purpose, and so forth.
Thanksgiving in the US is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, therefore this year it was on 22nd of the month and I had the opportunity to celebrate it here in Budapest. The history of Thanksgiving is rather debatable, so I will focus on the aspect of having a delicious dinner with my friends.
To be honest, I knew almost nothing about Hungary before I came to CEU. I was planning to spend my free time on traveling in those famous cities of Europe like Vienna, Rome, Paris, etc. Because of our limited conception of Hungary in China, some of my Chinese friends even asked me whether I would visit “the Grand Budapest Hotel”, which comes from a popular film but is actually located in Germany.
Kristina Simonyan, Balazs Kelemen, Katherine Yakimetz, Xian Ken Chen, students from the MS in Finance program, represented CEU at the Rotman European Trading Competition, hosted by LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome, August 23-25.
The competition aims to give students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to actual markets and allows teams from schools across Europe to participate in a simulated market.
When you are preparing for a big move, it is probably one of the most exciting moments in your life. But wait, you are coming for CEU as an incoming student and you have to be ready for one or two years’ stay. Living in a foreign country is not as easy as being a tourist. Thus, you should be more careful when packing your luggage. What should you pack before you come to Budapest? I know that your lifestyles and living habits must be different. For me, who have been here for nearly a year, I still regret that I forgot to bring some important things here when I was packing my bags.
Luckily in the heat wave, there are several places where CEU students can indulge in some gelato, and it only takes a less than 5-minute walk from CEU to get these sweet treats.
