According to Rector and President of Central European University Michael Ignatieff, “we are a generation that has had the misfortune of coming to maturity in a world that is full of hate,” meaning a high degree of intolerance towards other races, religions, sexualities, genders and nationalities.
Being a student in a foreign land can have its ups and downs. With no family to financially support you, the daily dosage of adult life can feel a little overwhelming. Owing to these factors I decided to join the CEU Phonathon Campaign initiated and managed by the Alumni Relations Office for some extra cash. Boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise!
On Valentine’s Day, CEU welcomed its alumna Madina Demirbash for a talk on relationships in the atrium of the Nador utca 13 building. Demirbash studied Gender Studies at CEU and has written a book on relationships entitled “The Art of Mature Love.” In her talk, she presented a chair as a metaphor for maturity in a relationship. She’d introduced the idea earlier at a TEDx event and she also created a hashtag for this metaphor: #machairity. Under this hashtag, she welcomes contributions and pictures relating to the topic.
A few days ago I was locked out on the CEU rooftop.
It can happen to anyone, especially during the winter months. Because of the slippery ice, snow or wind, the building staff closed it off. It was -5°C and windy. I am from Russia, but still didn’t want to spend a night in these conditions. After checking all the doors and having a strange dialogue with the receptionist through intercom, I escaped.
At one of the first social events of 2018 on a chilly Friday evening, the CEU community once again came together leaving behind the classes, the anxiety of midterms, deadlines, and the daily routine to celebrate Valentine’s day and warm up at a traditional ice skating party. A renowned CEU tradition for more than 10 years, it has brought together not only couples but friends and families, enthusiastic about sharing the joy of this cold-season fun-time.
A world in one room. Every step you make inside the room takes you to a different country or even a different continent. This is the room filled with the smell of different spices and sounds of different languages. This is the room filled with laughter, happiness and diversity. Welcome to a place where you can meet the beauty and soul of the world. Welcome to the CEU Intercultural Festival!
My name is Rebecca. I am in the Mundus Global Public Policy program at CEU. I moved from Texas to Budapest this past August with my 4-year-old son and husband. To prepare for our big adventure, we sold everything. Our family thought we were crazy to pick up and leave our careers and the comfort of our community of friends and family that we lived very close to. But we knew.
Since DeStress week is over, and the joy from Fur Therapy or the relief brought by the yoga sessions might start to fade away, this little guide of the best brunch places and confectioneries in Budapest might come handy trying to find your inner peace again.
Good news first: beautiful Budapest will not disappoint you if you’re a vegan or vegetarian. On the contrary, the plant-eating part of the population will love Budapest for its openness and great food. You will be positively surprised!
