Did the end of the semester leave our energy drained? Did the pile of papers and assignments kill the creativity or passion of the CEU community? The answer is a resounding No! CEU came together for an “open mic” event on March 23 during the spring semester's de-stress week to have fun and let our hair down. The annual Open Mic is a fun event that brings together talented members of the CEU community, including current students, alumni, and staff.
What matters most when applying for a job with an NGO? Persistence and professionalism, according to the experts. During the annual NGO fair organized by CEU's Human Rights Initiative in March, the Career Services department at CEU hosted a panel discussion with three alumni who work in NGOs to share their experiences: Katarzyna Pabijanek (GENS '05), Marta Vetier (ENVS '07), and Balint Nemeth (SPP '16).
With the weather getting warmer, you should think about taking a short vacation to Lake Balaton if you have never been. My studies at CEU started out with a very memorable trip to the lake. Before the beginning of classes in September, students from the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy were invited to join a three-day retreat on Lake Balaton—the largest lake in Central Europe, which is also known as the Hungarian Sea.
CEU has a relatively generous grant policy, enabling students to further their thesis research by conducting short-term research trips to institutions outside of Hungary. Trying to reduce my carbon footprint in recent years, I have strived to use ground transport rather than fly whenever it’s possible to reach my destination in under 24 hours.
Central European University has a lot to offer, both in terms of academia and a great sense of community. However, there are some amazing things at CEU that go way beyond these two. We are all aware that CEU just inaugurated two state of the art facilities right in the heart of Budapest. Apart from the academically magnanimous library and smart lecture rooms, one of the most defining features of the new buildings is the 7th floor roof garden.
When I first came to CEU, my fellow Alumni Scholarship Recipients (ASR) were some of the first people I met. The program provided a warm welcome and good introduction to student life. If you’re an incoming student this year, you should consider applying! It surprised me how many of my fellow students hadn’t heard of it, so let me tell you what the program is and what it’s like to be an Alumni Scholarship Recipient.
As an Alumni Scholarship recipient this year, I signed up for the Alumni Phonathon campaign as my way of giving back to the school and reaching out to the alumni who have so generously supported my education. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to go to CEU if not for them, and it was nice to be able to personally thank them. But as it turned out, this experience ended up teaching me a lot as well. I have a collection of calls that I’ll never forget.
Cooking can be therapeutic in the face of numerous deadlines. If you are anything like me, grocery shopping is an essential part of the week. Here are some of the “go to” places for groceries in Budapest.

The Central European University Career Camp was a week full of career development programs to help students kick start their career goals. A plethora of sessions were designed to tackle the most pressing career related questions and topics that students face while starting their job search. From longer workshops that deepen to a specific topic, to “grab and go” style lunch break info sessions, every CEU student could find a program that fit into his or her interest area.
Are you game? A multi-day, interactive event of the same name took place earlier in March in order to introduce the CEU community to the "Origins, Transformation, and Culture of Games" in a fun way. Games are a vital component of cultural heritage and social identity, yet are rarely seen as such.
