Frontiers of Democracy

Frontiers of Democracy is a far-reaching CEU initiative that aims to promote open debate, discussion, and exchange of ideas with a diversity of views about the nature of democracy today. Michael Roth, Germany’s Minister of State for Europe, gave a timely lecture on "Strengthening Democracy and Open Societies in Europe" at CEU on Oct. 27. The talk, organized within the framework of the Frontiers of Democracy Initiative, was co-hosted by CEU's School of Public Policy and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

German Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth stressed the importance of dialog as he began a two-day talk series in Hungary yesterday. Referring to German concerns about certain Hungarian government measures, Roth said it is highly important that responsible politicians of the two countries talk with each other rather than by each other. Speaking to journalists, Roth stressed the values of freedom, independence, rule of law, freedom of the press, and peaceful co-existence for minorities that were at the center of Europe’s peaceful revolution 25 years ago.

Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia, who delivered a public lecture at CEU on October 18 titled "The Mongolian Transition to Democracy and Lessons" while on an official visit to Hungary.
