Frontiers of Democracy

Frontiers of Democracy is a far-reaching CEU initiative that aims to promote open debate, discussion, and exchange of ideas with a diversity of views about the nature of democracy today. The Center for European Enlargement Studies hosted the 10th event of "History Lesson About Freedom: Freedom Today and the Future of Europe. 25 Years After 1989" on Dec. 9. The public debate series was initiated and supported by the Polish Institute and the Embassy of Poland in Budapest to mark the 25th anniversary of the democratic transformation in Central and Eastern Europe.

Whether civil society is good for open society was just one topic that CEU Founder and Honorary Chairman George Soros and SPP/CEU Professor Wiktor Osiatynski touched on during a discussion at CEU Nov. 26 as part of the Frontiers of Democracy initiative.

The “Drivers of Democratization in East Central Europe; 25 Years of Civil Society” conference at CEU Nov. 24 explored the ways in which civil society evolved in East Central Europe in the last 25 years. Co-hosted by CEU’s Center for EU Enlargement Studies and the Budapest Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the conference featured experts from Croatia, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.
