Thousands of refugees cross through Croatia and Slovenia daily. Non-profit organizations in Budapest are still actively delivering much-needed supplies to the border areas, and CEU’s Refugee Crisis Task Force invites the CEU community to come together once again to help out. They are collecting food items, and meal vouchers are also welcome - CEU volunteers will purchase needed items with them. This time, in addition to collecting food items and vouchers through Wednesday, November 4, community members can volunteer to get together to prepare food packages on Friday, November 6.

Kate Coyer, director of the Civil Society and Technology Project at the Center for Media, Data and Society at SPP, and Stefan Roch, doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science at CEU, gave a brief overview of the Keleti Wifi / mobile charging project and the ongoing efforts across the region to continue to provide tech support and communication access for refugees on Oct. 22.

The large turnout at the public panel on "Philosophy, the refugee crisis, and how to help in Hungary," hosted by CEU’s Department of Philosophy on September 22, indicated a keen interest across CEU in helping refugees and migrants, as well as in philosophical analysis of political debates about migration policy.

Like millions of other Syrians, refugee Maan Abu Layla fled Syria to escape the violence in his country. Abu Layla was one of four Syrians who shared their perspectives of the refugee crisis at a panel discussion hosted by the Center for Conflict, Negotiation and Recovery on Oct. 7.

Central European University (CEU) is offering a number of full scholarship packages for Syrian citizens at the master's and doctoral level for Academic Year 2016/2017. Applications are welcome for all academic areas for the full length of the program. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit.

In this four-day filmmaking workshop focusing on the refugee crisis, participants will make short films about one person or one family, a place, situation or attitudes represented by citizens in European countries. The workshop, hosted by the Open Society Archives and the Visual Studies Platform at CEU, will be held November 11-14 at CEU. It is free of charge and open to filmmakers and students interested in documentary and human rights.

The Demjan Group, owned by one of Hungary’s most prominent businessman Sandor Demjan, has donated € 1 million to establish a migration fund to support improving conditions for refugee children currently in Hungary or on the borders of the country. The fund will be used to buy food, clothing, finance domestic travel, healthcare and to produce information materials and assist civilians and authorities who are working to resolve the situation. CEU Business School alumna Borbala Czako (IMC'90) has been appointed to chair the fund.
