The Undergraduate Studies Program at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for an Academic Advisor position. The role is located in Vienna.


The successful candidate will develop meaningful advising relationships with students and apply knowledge of the CEU BA program curricula, university policies and regulations to guide and support students on their academic path throughout their undergraduate studies. 


Tasks and Responsibilities 

  • Maintain current and detailed knowledge of all BA degree programs and their curricula, including knowledge of requirements for degree majors and minors.
  • Maintain current and detailed knowledge of university academic policies and procedures. Proactively keep abreast of any changes in these.
  • Based on knowledge of program curricula, proactively plan advising sessions throughout the year to guide BA students from first year enrollment to degree completion. 
    • During spring term, meet individually with each student to help plan and map out their next year(s).
    • At the beginning of each term, support and guide students with curricular issues during the course registration process, planning individual meetings as necessary.
    • Schedule termly check-in meetings with each student.
  • Monitor student progress keeping abreast of any problems (poor attendance, struggles, etc.) in order to drive student engagement and support students in academic success and program completion. Proactively schedule check-ins with struggling students as necessary.
  • Make sure students are on track to meet major and degree requirements.
  • Understand available CEU resources and provide students with recommendations of appropriate resources based on their needs. Identify and report any gaps in CEU resources.
  • Build meaningful relationships that lead to self-efficacy in students. Encourage and support students by having impactful advising interactions that highlight student strengths and encourage perseverance and student retention.
  • Assess and clarify student needs by employing active listening skills.
  • Provide information and resources necessary for students to make well-informed decisions. Review student academic records and progress to help make proper course recommendations and to best advise on academic path. Assist students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals.
  • Ensure commitment to curriculum, including advising and approving add/drop requests.
  • Advise on transfers between programs.
  • Develop and apply knowledge of university policies and programs and CEU processes to create course plans and overcome challenge.
  • Participate in orientation sessions and recruitment sessions presenting program curricula and academic requirements to both students and parents.
  • Deliver articulate oral and written communication that meets the needs of varying audiences including students, BA leadership, faculty and cross-functional partners.
  • Collaborate appropriately with Dean, Program Heads, teammates and partner units to champion students’ needs and interests.
  • Work with Career Services to coordinate a joint plan for professional and academic choices. 
  • Respond in a timely manner to student inquiries.
  • Serve as an advisory in the development and revision of curriculum and degree plans.
  • Provide support for study abroad programs for both incoming and outgoing students including developing a framework for student mobility/exchange programs and liaising with partner organisations.
  • Work with partners, including CIVICA and OSUN, when related to curriculum choices and exchanges.



  • Previous experience with academic advising, student services, student affairs, career development, counselling and/or related field.
  • Previous experience in the field of higher education, especially knowledge of the US and Austrian higher education systems.
  • Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and interact all relevant stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and administer academic policy.
  • Ability to facilitate training and orientation activities.
  • Ability to identify and determine problems, analyse information and implement solutions.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a changing environment.
  • Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
