The Undergraduate Studies Program at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for an Academic Advisor position. The role is located in Vienna.


The successful candidate will develop meaningful advising relationships with students and apply knowledge of the CEU BA program curricula, university policies and regulations to guide and support students on their academic path throughout their undergraduate studies. 


Duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain current and detailed knowledge of all BA degree programs and their curricula, including knowledge of requirements for majors and minors.
  • Maintain current and detailed knowledge of university academic policies and procedures. Proactively keep abreast of any changes in these.
  • Based on knowledge of program curricula, proactively plan advising sessions throughout the year to guide BA students from first year enrollment to degree completion.
  • Take care of course pre-registration by creating forms, checking if students fulfill their program requirements and handling all data.
  • Administer major/minor selection process (including setting up relevant forms and keeping track of data) and make sure students are on track to meet major and degree requirements.
  • Review student academic records and progress to help make proper course recommendations and to best advise on academic path.
  • Assist students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals
  • Monitor student progress keeping abreast of any problems in order to drive student engagement and support students in academic success and program completion.
  • Understand available CEU resources and provide students with recommendations of appropriate resources based on their needs. Identify and report any gaps in CEU resources.
  • Encourage and support students by having impactful advising interactions that highlight student strengths and encourage perseverance and student retention.
  • Participate in orientation sessions and recruitment sessions presenting program curricula and academic requirements to both students and parents.
  • Collaborate appropriately with Dean, Program Directors, teammates and partner units to champion students’ needs and interests.
  • Create and run workshops for students on relevant topics including study skills, time management, etc.
  • Serve as an advisory in the development and revision of curriculum and degree plans.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the study abroad program for both incoming and outgoing students.
  • Support mobility partnerships, including CIVICA, OSUN and potential others.
  • Assist with any other relevant tasks assigned by the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Senior Project Manager.
  • There may be occasional work after-hours, for example student-wide information sessions, holding an advising session for a student in a different time zone, or dealing with emergencies. 


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Previous experience with academic advising, student services, student affairs, career development, counselling and/or related field
  • Previous experience in the field of higher education, especially knowledge of the US and Austrian higher education systems
  • Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build working relationships with students, faculty and staff
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and administer academic policy
  • Ability to facilitate training and orientation activities
  • Ability to identify and determine problems, analyze information and implement solutions.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a changing environment
  • Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint


We offer a yearly salary of 40,000 EUR, that is commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment.
