The Audio Education Specialist (AES) is an exciting new position reporting to the Head of the Media Hub/Media & Visual Education Specialist and with responsibility for establishing CEU’s new Audio Lab at CEU Private University / Vienna Campus from September 2020. The Audio Lab includes a recording studio for recording podcasts, interviews, voice over for film, etc.; a mixing room equipped with Pro Tools and a professional mixing system; and a small inventory of field recording equipment. In collaboration with the Head of the Media Hub, the AES will expand the CEU Library’s program to offer media education across CEU’s departments and degree programs in the social sciences and humanities, and develop and support a range of initiatives that fall broadly within audio production. 

 

These areas of focus include podcasting; film sound editing, mixing and recording; sound art, soundscapes and soundwalks; as well as related areas of interest and expertise in the field of audio production and sound studies. The educational programming to be developed by the AES includes: teaching a full semester course in audio production; running workshops on various subjects, including podcasting; and collaborating with CEU faculty to devise and support assignments in existing courses that use audio to communicate knowledge of a discipline, such as turning written assignments into audio assignments. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Establish the new Audio lab and integrate it into campus educational programming
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Audio Lab and its associated equipment
  • Conduct training sessions for Audio Lab users on how to use the lab and its equipment, as well as check out procedures and guidelines for use
  • Offer direct assistance to users on the audio recording studio and mixing suite
  • Teach 1-2 full semester courses on audio production per year
  • Teach non-credit workshops in select areas of audio production, such as podcasting
  • Offer in-class presentations in filmmaking courses on how to mix audio for film, and oversee student mixing in the lab
  • Curate and maintain the CEU Podcast Library (https://podcasts.ceu.edu)
  • Produce tutorials and instructional materials for audio production education
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the Audio Lab and its equipment, including performing regular maintenance, and troubleshooting equipment problems
  • Oversee the ordering of appropriate replacement parts and implement and configure them
  • Stay current on technical trends in audio production technology, and provide input related to new equipment purchases

 

Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in audio production, film production, or a related field
  • Proficiency with professional recording equipment, and post-production and mixing software and hardware for field and studio
  • Experience teaching audio production and/or post-production at the university level, including experience mentoring students in the conceptualization, planning, execution, and presentation of audio-based course projects.
  • Creative or professional experience in audio production or post-production (including media scoring - film, broadcast, podcast, video, video games, virtual reality, multimedia)
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the importance of media literacy in education and society
  • Proven ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in an academic environment
  • Experience working with diverse, multicultural populations and/or teaching pedagogies
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Spoken German is an advantage

 

RESIDENCE
The appointment will be in Vienna.
