The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for two positions at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position. It is anticipated that one appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer and one appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer.

Founded in 2011, the Center for Teaching and Learning comprises teaching and learning scholars who work with doctoral students and faculty across all departments and schools. We expect applicants with a PhD; experience in working at an education department, center for teaching and learning, or similar unit; and an excellent teaching record in higher education. The lecturer/senior lecturer will support CEU faculty and collaborate with them on contemporary, research-based approaches to teaching and mentoring in undergraduate and graduate education. They will teach courses in higher education pedagogy for CEU PhD students, as well as support doctoral students as they grow as future university teachers. They will also be involved in mentoring CEU Global Teaching Fellows and other early-career teachers. The Senior Lecturer should also have the ability, if required, to participate in the administration and collegial leadership of the CTL team; develop and implement programs and initiatives; advise university stakeholders on teaching and learning-related issues; and collaborate with other university faculty, units, and administrators. The initial contract is for three years with the possibility of renewal for another 3 years.

Duties and responsibilities (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer):

-          Teaching courses in the CTL Certificate Program for Excellence in Teaching in Higher Education for CEU doctoral students

-          Mentoring of CEU Global Teaching Fellows and other early-career teachers

-          Supporting faculty in their teaching at CEU

-          Supporting faculty in teaching innovations and research on their teaching (e.g., Teaching Development Grants)

-          Supporting CEU doctoral students and graduates of CEU doctoral programs in scholarly teaching

-          Engaging in research, publications, and scholarly activities

-          If required, leading or contributing to CTL-based research, training, or dissemination projects

-          If required, leading or participating in writing grant proposals to attract funding for CTL teaching and research activities

-          If required, development of new initiatives and programs at the CTL and/or university

-          If required, administrative, managerial, and/or leadership responsibilities, collegially exercised

-          If required, advising on teaching- and learning-related issues at the university and collaboration with other university faculty, units, and administrators

-          Other duties as required

 

Qualifications (Lecturer):

-          PhD, DPhil, EdD, or comparable degree is required. The degree should be in education, an education cognate (e.g., sociology, history, or public policy) with an educational focus, or have at least 3 years teaching experience at the university level after receiving their PhD or comparable degree.

-          Documented teaching experience in educational departments, centers for excellence in teaching, or similar units after completion of the PhD or comparable degree is required.

-          Completion of a certificate in teaching in higher education, membership in the Higher Education Academy, or similar higher education teaching qualifications is desirable.

-          The candidate should have interest and demonstrated expertise in, at least, one area of teaching and learning in higher education (for example: design for learning, curriculum design, online learning, blended learning, learning technologies, experiential learning, diversity in higher education, assessment of student learning, reflective practice).

-          A record of research and publications, or potential therefore. It is desirable that at least some publications are in the field of education.

-          Experience supervising graduate students and/or mentoring teachers are desirable.

-          Applicants should exhibit a passion for teaching and an openness to employing innovative teaching approaches to active student learning.

-          Strong oral and written communication skills and familiarity with range of learning technologies.

-          Collegiality and respect for diversity are required. International experience is desirable.

Qualifications (Senior Lecturer)

-          PhD, DPhil, EdD, or comparable degree is required. A degree in education or an education cognate (e.g., sociology, history, or public policy) with an educational focus is desirable.

-          A minimum of 6 years teaching at the university level after completion of the PhD or comparable degree is required.

-          Documented teaching experience in educational departments, centers for excellence in teaching, or similar units after completion of the PhD or comparable degree is required.

-          Completion of a certificate in teaching in higher education, membership in the Higher Education Academy, or similar higher education teaching qualifications is desirable.

-          Documented experience leading department-, program-, or university-wide initiatives concerning educational excellence is strongly desirable. Experience leading departments, units, or programs is desirable. Ability to lead long-term, strategic planning is desirable.

-          The candidate should have interest and demonstrated expertise in, at least, one area of teaching and learning in higher education (for example: design for learning, curriculum design, online learning, blended learning, learning technologies, experiential learning, diversity in higher education, assessment of student learning, reflective practice).

-          A record of research, publications, and scholarly activity with an international impact, at least some of which in the field of education, is required.

-          Experience supervising graduate students and/or mentoring teachers is required.

-          Applicants should exhibit a passion for teaching and an openness to employing innovative teaching approaches to active student learning.

-          Strong oral and written communication skills and familiarity with range of learning technologies.

-          Collegiality and respect for diversity are required. International experience is desirable.

Residence

The appointment will be based in Vienna. Occasional travel may be required.

It is anticipated that one appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer and one appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer. The rank of appointment is at the discretion of the CEU. Meeting the minimum requirements for the senior lecturer position does not guarantee appointment at the rank. The hiring committee will seek to first nominate a candidate for the senior lecturer position. At its discretion, it may consider those candidates who are not nominated for senior lecturer position for the lecturer position, instead. Candidates should specify in their cover letter the position (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or both Lecturer/Senior Lecturer) for which they wish to be considered and believe they meet the minimum qualifications.
