Environmental Systems Laboratory (https://syslab.ceu.edu/) at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position under the supervision of Prof. Victor Lagutov to participate in the newly established GeoHub project funded by the Open Society University Network (https://opensocietyuniversitynetwork.org/research/projects/geohub/ ),.
Geospatial technologies, including GIS, satellite imagery, mobile technologies, cloud computing, etc., are becoming increasingly recognized as important tools in social studies, particularly relevant to many OSUN teaching and research domains. At the same time, wider application of the geospatial technologies seems to be slow or hindered due to various reasons, particularly prohibitive price of software and trainings, as well as wide range of rapidly and constantly evolving technologies. Some OSUN institutions have developed some expertise yet missing broader picture due to lack of resources. The GeoHub project’s goal is to bridge this gap through the integration of efforts and consolidation of existing resources. It aims at developing capacities of the OSUN members to utilize the latest geospatial tools and technologies in their core research and teaching disciplines.
The successful applicant will join ongoing and prospective research on the GeoHub focus areas, such as analysis of land use and land cover change or application of space-based information in disaster risk reduction. The responsibilities will also include contribution to organizing and conducting online and onsite geospatial trainings for students and researchers across the OSUN member institutions, train-the-trainers workshops for instructors, joint professional training programs and other outreach activities.
The position starts in April 2022 and is based at CEU’s Budapest campus but assumes a close collaboration with other CEU units in Vienna as well as OSUN’s GeoHub partners.
Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, a PhD in GIS, remote sensing, environmental sciences and policy, or a related field, and has work experience in practical application of geospatial technologies and remote sensing in various domains, including but not limited to environmental management, public policy and humanities.

Compensation

We offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment. The initial contract is until March 2023 and may be extended by another year.
