The Department of Economics and Business of the Central European University (CEU) invites applications for the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher for the duration of two years.   

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join our project, “Parental Leave and Career Trajectories of Men and Women in Austria. In this project, will use novel administrative data to examine how career interruptions due to childbirth and subsequent parental leave drive the gender differences in earnings in Austria, and investigate how parental leave policies can shape leave-taking.  

The position will be based at the Department of Economics at the Central European University for the duration of two years. The position will start in January 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. You will be working as an integral part of a research team based at the Economics Departments of the University of Vienna and the Central European University. The Principal Investigators of this project are Alice Kügler, Omar Bamieh, and Lennart Ziegler. 

 

Qualifications 

  • Completed or are close to obtaining a PhD in Economics for the successful conduct of empirical research. 
  • Proven expertise and research background in one or more of the following fields: labor economics, public economics and gender economics.  
  • Proven skills and experience in quantitative methods which demonstrate your capacity to conduct original and rigorous research. 
  • Experience working with micro-data and/or large datasets, and ideally, you have worked with administrative data such as social security records. 
  • Evidence of the capacity to prepare excellent publications.  
  • Commitment to high-quality research. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as to work collaboratively as part of a team and willingness to take responsibility for tasks.  
  • Effective written and verbal communication and time and task management skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and intellectual breadth. 
  • Outstanding knowledge of statistical and econometrics software, such as STATA or R. 
  • Fluency in English is essential. Knowledge of German is not a requirement but an advantage.

  • You will have a central role in all aspects of the research process, from data construction and analysis to drafting and publishing academic papers.  
  • You will work with novel datasets constructed from administrative data on earnings, income, taxation and transfers, education, and firms. 
  • You will be part of a team delivering high-impact research that is publishable in top international academic journals.  
  • You will present your research at international conferences, with funding for travel expenses available. 
  • You will be involved in a wide range of project dissemination activities, including workshops and conferences. 
  • You will have time dedicated to advancing your own research agenda.  
  • You are encouraged to contribute to the overall activities of the Department more broadly and attend seminars. 
  • The position does not include teaching obligations but some involvement in teaching is possible. 
  • The position is based in Vienna and requires regular presence at the department.  
  • You will be an integral part of a team of researchers with expertise in gender and labor economics. 
  • You will hold a full-time position (40 hours per week).

Compensation 

We offer a competitive yearly gross salary of 60,926.60 EUR, for candidates who hold a PhD when starting the position.
