Reflecting on the intellectual strengths and values of its parent institution, Central European University, the CEU Press has been publishing books since 1993 by authors from around the world on a wide range of subjects in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including political philosophy and practices of open society, history, Jewish studies, economics, medieval studies, literature, legal studies, nationalism, human rights, political science, international relations, gender studies, media studies, and art history. We publish authors that bring a regional perspective to some of the major issues of the world, contributing to global debates on pressing topics such as democracy and climate change.

To ensure that the end-to-end process of book production at CEU Press is executed to an excellent standard we invite applications for a part-time (30 hours/week) Production Coordinator position in Budapest. The Production Coordinator will monitor and control all stages of book production – from book proposal approval through pre-press, production, and transfer on to sales and marketing – for an increasing number of titles per annum at CEU Press.

Key Responsibilities:
The new colleagues will be responsible for the entire workflow schedule and coordination between stakeholders and suppliers, as well as working with internal and external stakeholders to capture data and improve processes.

Pre approval

  • Maintain overview of books under review in liaison with editors
  • Compile documents for book projects with book proposal, P&L, reviews, and response from authors for Editorial Board meetings

Post acceptance

  • Check manuscripts submitted to see if they fulfil the required submission criteria, and if not, in conjunction with editors liaise with authors so that they reach that standard
  • Oversee the book production workflow from submission of final manuscript to production of print and eBook files for market
  • Cooperate closely with the Editors and where agreed arrange for the copy-editing, proofreading and indexing of titles and ensure that deadlines are met
  • Ensure outsourced suppliers follow the house style and create the required formats
  • Liaise with external partners and suppliers when needed to ensure the production of titles is running smoothly and according to schedule and budget
  • Ensure general title marketing tasks are achieved accordingly to schedule and send reminders where needed
  • Create eBook and print files for individual titles and share with the Sales & Marketing Coordinator for dissemination


  • Collate invoices for individual titles for the Senior Financial Coordinator to close book title accounts promptly
  • Identify problems that arise during the production process and bring any issues to the attention of relevant colleagues
  • Capture all relevant data (forms, files, etc.) centrally accordingly to GDPR rules and look for ways to create efficiencies along the entire workflow

Person Specification:

  • Excellent organizational skills to manage a busy schedule
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to be firm but diplomatic to ensure deadlines are kept
  • Self-motivated with a desire to improve ways of working
  • Ability to work well with the Press team, academics and suppliers


  • Bachelor’s degree (at least)
  • 2-3 years experience in managing workflows and capturing data
  • Experience in producing print and digital products
  • Excellent English language proficiency
  • Understanding of publishing
  • Good IT skills; knowledge to help in assessment and review of data

We offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience, as well as a dynamic and international academic environment. The initial contract is for one year with the possibility of renewal.
