The Central European University (CEU) seeks to appoint a full-time Project Manager on a major new research initiative in philosophy, the Knowledge in Crisis Cluster of Excellence.  

CEU is the lead institution in this recently awarded FWF (Austrian Research Council) project. The project is a collaboration between four institutions (CEU and the universities of Vienna, Graz and Salzburg) to explore fundamental philosophical questions about the nature of knowledge and its construction and consumption. The Cluster of Excellence scheme is part of the FWF’s largest ever research funding initiative. Knowledge in Crisis is one of five Clusters of Excellence awarded in 2023.  

The Project Manager will be full-time (40 hours/week) and will have two roles: (1) responsibility for managing all the practical aspects of the project, and (2) responsibility for the organization of the knowledge transfer and outreach component. The Project Manager will report to Professor Tim Crane of the CEU Philosophy Department, the leader of the Cluster.  

We are looking for someone with excellent communication and organizational skills, who is willing to innovate and take responsibility for organizational matters. The manager must be able to work well as part of a team and must have excellent English and German.  

Main tasks:  

  • Acts as the coordinator and main organizer of activities pertaining to the knowledge transfer and outreach component of the Cluster 
  • Supports the work of the Cluster Director and other members of the scientific team  
  • Assists the academic team in the preparation of scientific reports, takes part in the preparation of the financial report 
  • Manages the project in cooperation with CEU academic and administrative units (communications, procurement, research support, IT, HR) 

 

Required skills and qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree 
  • Relevant previous experience in managing research projects (especially in Austria) is an advantage 
  • Proficiency in spoken and written German and English 
  • High computer proficiency, especially in the use of MS Word and Excel 
  • Ability to multi-task, as well as prioritizing conflicting needs while meeting tight deadlines 
  • Ability to administer long-term assignments independently as well as in a team 
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds, gender and cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, willing to innovate and take responsibility for organizational matters
  • Well-organized, has strong work ethic and a friendly, positive attitude 
  • A genuine interest in the topic of the Cluster is an advantage 

  

Compensation 

We offer a competitive salary starting from a gross of 61,000 EUR/year. A higher salary is possible if warranted by the candidate’s working experience.  

This will be a fixed-term contract for a period of 5 years.
