For the last several months, negotiations have continued between New York State and the Government of Hungary regarding CEU’s future in Budapest. CEU has deliberately abstained from comment in order to facilitate successful negotiations. As you know, CEU is not at the negotiating table. However, we have been informed that negotiations have created the basis for an agreement.

CEU formally began its new Academic Year today, welcoming students, faculty, staff and distinguished guests with an Opening Ceremony held in the spirit of free inquiry, diversity, and open society that are the hallmarks of CEU. President and Rector Michael Ignatieff welcomed more than 700 new students from more than 90 countries to the CEU community, which now includes 1,500 students and hundreds of staff and faculty, as well as 14,000 alumni worldwide.

Professor Petra Aczel, Head of the Institute of Behavioural Sciences and Communication Theory at Corvinus University, and Maurizio Pirro, Associate Professor of German Literature of the University of Bari Aldo Moro will receive the sixth annual CEU European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, initiated by CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei and overseen by the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), aims to promote excellence in teaching across the European Higher Education Area.

Budapest, June 23, 2017 – Today at Central European University's 26th graduation ceremony, 708 students from 97 countries received master's, doctoral degrees and non-degree certificates at Budapest's Palace of Arts (MUPA). The University also awarded the Open Society Prize to former German President Joachim Gauck in recognition of his courageous defense of human rights and his distinguished record in the service of free societies.

Mr. Gauck, called “a true teacher of democracy” by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, served as president of Germany from 2012 to 2017.

Budapest, May 24, 2017 – Central European University (CEU) welcomes today’s statement by New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo indicating his readiness to enter into discussions “without delay” with the Hungarian government about the amendments to the Higher Education Act that particularly target CEU. Cuomo’s statement is timely, since Hungary has until tomorrow to respond to the European Commission’s letter of formal notice that it has launched infringement proceedings. The European Parliament’s resolution of May 17 called on the Hungarian government to enter into negotiations with the U.S.
