Budapest, March 31, 2017 – Central European University (CEU) utterly rejects the Prime Minister of Hungary's false allegations that CEU is “cheating.” Contrary to the Prime Minister's statement, there is no current Hungarian law that requires universities to have operations in their home countries in order to award degrees in Hungary. CEU is accredited to award Hungarian and U.S. degrees.

Budapest, March 30, 2017 – Following a meeting with Hungarian government officials yesterday, Central European University (CEU) remains concerned the government does not yet fully realize the implications of the proposed legislation. It remains unclear to CEU why the legislation is necessary, given CEU's full compliance with Hungarian law, and widespread acknowledgement of CEU’s contributions to Hungarian academic life.

CEU is demanding an immediate correction, with threat of legal penalties, to the defamatory article that has appeared in Origo containing outright falsehoods about our operation, based on a leaked report from the Education Ministry, that the ministry has not had the courtesy to share with us.

Central European University (CEU) expresses its opposition to proposed amendments to Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education, tabled in Hungarian Parliament today. After careful legal study, CEU has concluded that these amendments would make it impossible for the University to continue its operations as an institution of higher education in Budapest, CEU's home for 25 years. CEU is in full conformity with Hungarian law. The proposed legislation targets CEU directly and is therefore discriminatory and unacceptable.

Toward the goal of becoming a leader in digital technologies in Europe, Hungary is building its largest pavilion ever at the CeBIT conference, which starts in Hannover March 20, and CEU InnovationsLab company Talk-A-Bot will be one of the exhibitors as a successful innovative startup. Talk-A-Bot represented the 18 Hungarian companies participating in CeBIT at a press conference held today by Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs and government project manager Tamas Deutsch.

The new Department will welcome its first cohort of master’s and doctoral students in the 2017-18 academic year.

With the assistance of a €440,000 Erasmus + grant, CEU will be able to upscale its weekend courses for registered refugees in Hungary and offer a full-time, non-degree university preparatory program for refugees across the European Economic Area (EEA). The programs, jointly known as OLIves (Open Learning Initiatives), now consist of the weekend program, OLIve-WP, and the fulltime program, OLIve-UP.
