At its most recent meeting in July, the Board of Trustees of CEU voted unanimously to invite President and Rector John Shattuck to serve another term. Shattuck became CEU's fourth President and Rector in 2009.

Central European University was greatly saddened to hear of the sudden passing of one of its longtime friends and supporters, Peter Hangartner, on March 16. President and Rector John Shattuck noted that all at CEU who had the privilege of knowing him, or benefited from his generous support, would feel the loss. Committed to the University from its earliest days, Hangartner was a benefactor who made gifts in honor of George Soros’ 70th birthday and Yehuda Elkana’s service as CEU president and rector on the occasion of his retirement.
CEU President and Rector John Shattuck gave a keynote speech on human rights at the Carter Center annual conference in San Diego, California on February 23. The panel also included Robert Pastor, American University professor and member of the National Security Council during the Carter administration, and Karin Ryan, director of the Carter Center Human Rights Program.
