On Friday, September 16, 2011, Central European University held the 2011/2012 Academic Year Opening Ceremony, marking the official beginning of the University's 21st Academic Year. The event was held in the Ceremonial Hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and was followed by a reception on the university campus for students, faculty, staff, and guests.

On 1 August 2009, John Shattuck, an international legal scholar and human rights leader, became the fourth President and Rector of Central European University.
Announcing the appointment in January 2009, Leon Botstein, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CEU and President of Bard College, noted that “John Shattuck has worked tirelessly to promote open society across the globe, and his leadership will reinforce the university’s commitment to international justice and the rule of law.”
